Motherhood Photography FAQ for PNW Families
Questions About Maternity and Newborn Photography in Bellingham and the Skagit Valley
Motherhood photography looks a little different than traditional portrait sessions. Pregnancy and the early days with a new baby come with their own pace, questions, and uncertainties. The answers below are here to offer clarity around timing, preparation, and what this experience looks like for families in Bellingham and throughout the Skagit Valley.
What is your approach to maternity and newborn photography?
My work focuses on documenting pregnancy and early motherhood as it naturally unfolds, with an emphasis on connection over perfection. Sessions are guided but unforced, creating images that feel meaningful now and later.
Who is this type of photography best suited for?
My approach is ideal for families who prefer a relaxed, natural experience and images that focus on connection rather than posing. It’s especially well suited for pregnancy and early motherhood.
When should I schedule a maternity photography session?
When you are between 32 and 35 weeks pregnant is ideal. You want to be showing but not so far along you aren't comfortable. Babies also run the show and sometimes decide to make an early appearance!
When is the best time to schedule newborn photos?
The best time to schedule newborn photos is as soon as you feel ready. My clients typically call me as soon as the baby is here and we are photographing within the first few weeks home.
Can maternity photos be done at home as well?
Yes. In-home maternity sessions are a beautiful way to remember this time— quiet mornings, familiar rooms, the place where your baby will soon be loved and where they will be growing up. There’s something deeply meaningful about documenting this chapter in your home. I travel around Whatcom County for these sessions.
Can I order prints or wall art?
Yes. Your maternity and newborn photos are meant to live off your computer or phone! I offer professional prints and timeless wall art so these memories can be held, seen, and passed down
Do you offer in-home newborn photography, and what if my house is small?
In-home newborn photography is the best way to document those first days as a family, and your home doesn’t need to be a certain size or perfectly styled. I work with natural light and simple spaces, focusing on connection rather than the room itself, so small or lived-in homes photograph beautifully.
What if my home doesn’t get a lot of natural light?
That’s completely okay. It's part of living in the Pacific Northwest. I’ll gently find the light that’s there and work with it. I also own artificial light and will utilize it when needed
Do you allow dogs or pets to be included in sessions?
Of course. Pets are part of the story too. If they’re part of your everyday life, they’re welcome to be part of these memories.
Do we need to clean or prepare our home before an in-home session?
No, life is welcome here. I’ll help you choose a few meaningful spaces and offer simple guidance if needed. Your home doesn’t need to be perfect to be worthy of remembering.
What if I feel awkard or don't know how to pose?
You don’t need to know what to do. Whether maternity photos, newborn or a milestone with your family, I’ll guide you in a way that feels natural and unforced - allowing moments to unfold rather than be posed. When children are part of the session, we will incorporate games and play to keep them comfortable and having fun.
How far do you travel for sessions?
While I live in Ferndale, I travel around Bellingham, Skagit Valley and Whatcom County frequently. If you live outside this area, please reach out. I'm always happy to talk about travel
Can sessions include siblings and partners?
Yes, always. These sessions are about connection and the entire family. Partners, siblings and even your family pet are always welcome!
How far in advance should we reach out to book a session?
As soon as you know you're pregnant or want photos. I try to leave enough space in my calendar to comfortably accomodate families. However, that means I do book up early. So as soon as you're thinking about photos, drop me a note so we can talk about scheduling.
