When Should You Book Your Newborn Session? A Guide for Bellingham Families

There is a lot to think about when you are getting ready for a new baby.

What car seat do you need?
What the heck are you supposed to pack in that hospital bag?
Will you ever sleep again?

And somewhere in the middle of all of that, you may be wondering:

When should I book my newborn photographer?

If you are looking for a Bellingham newborn photographer, I want to make this part easy for you.

The short answer is: I recommend reaching out to your newborn photographer during pregnancy rather than waiting until your baby arrives.

But there is a little more to it than that.

When should you book a newborn photographer?

I recommend booking your newborn photography session while you are still pregnant.

You do not need to know the exact day your baby will arrive. In fact, nobody really does.

Instead, we can use your due date as a general guide and plan your session around that.

Booking during pregnancy gives you one less thing to think about once your baby is here. And trust me, once that baby arrives, your brain is going to have plenty of other things to think about.

Your newborn photographer can reserve space around your due date and then you can get in touch once your baby arrives so we can choose the best actual session date.

When should newborn photos actually happen?

One of the questions I hear most often is about the “perfect” age for newborn photos.

And here is where I want to take some pressure off.

There is no magic number of days that your baby has to be for beautiful newborn photography.

And then there is the whole “two-week-old” thing…

Something I also want you to know is that those first few weeks can look very different from baby to baby.

Around two weeks, a lot of babies start cluster feeding. Some babies develop a little baby acne. Some suddenly get a bit fussier or just seem to need a whole lot more of Mom.

And there is absolutely no way to know ahead of time which baby is going to do what.

I've seen it all.

The sleepy baby.
The wide-awake baby.
The baby who wants to eat the entire time.
The baby who needs to be held.
The baby with baby acne.
The baby who is just... not having it.

And you know what?

That's okay.

I've photographed enough newborns to know that things don't always go according to plan. My job isn't to make your baby fit into a perfect photography timeline. My job is to meet your baby where they are and create a relaxed experience for you.

So if your baby is two weeks old and suddenly wants to nurse every 45 seconds, we're going to roll with it.

If your baby is a little fussy, we'll take a break.

If baby needs to be held, hold that baby.

We aren't fighting the newborn phase. We're documenting it.

And I promise, you don't have to show up with a perfectly sleepy, perfectly posed, perfectly behaved newborn.

You just need to show up with your baby. I've got the rest.

What if my baby comes early or late?

This is another reason I don't want you stressing about choosing the exact session date months in advance.

Your due date is simply our starting point.

Babies have their own schedules, and we will adjust once your little one arrives.

If your baby comes early, we'll figure it out.

If your baby decides to hang out a little longer than expected, we'll figure that out too.

The goal isn't to create a stressful experience where you are frantically trying to hit some imaginary photography deadline.

The goal is to document this tiny person who has just joined your family.

What should I look for in a Bellingham newborn photographer?

This is a really important question.

Because choosing a newborn photographer isn't just about finding someone whose pictures you like.

Of course you should LOVE their work. But I would also pay attention to how they approach babies and families.

Ask yourself:

Do I like the way these photographs feel?

Are they natural?
Are they connected?
Do the images feel like real people and real relationships?

And then ask:

Do I feel comfortable with this photographer?

You are inviting this person into an incredibly intimate season of your life. You should feel cared for, respected, and comfortable—not like you have to perform for the camera.

I believe newborn photography should be about more than creating a collection of pretty pictures.

It should feel like an experience where you can slow down for a minute and actually take in what is happening

What happens during a newborn photography session?

This is where I think lifestyle newborn photography can be so beautiful.

Instead of expecting your baby to behave perfectly for the camera, we can let the session unfold around your family.

Baby needs to eat? Feed the baby.

Baby needs a diaper change? Change the baby.

Baby wants to be held? Hold the baby.

This isn't a performance.

It is your life.

And those little in-between moments are often some of my favorite photographs.

The way you look down at your baby.

The way your partner holds that tiny hand.

The way an older sibling wants to get close—and maybe then immediately loses interest because, well, they're a kid.

The sleepy cuddles.

The tiny details.

The beautiful chaos.

That is the stuff I want to remember.

Do newborn photos have to be perfectly posed?

Nope.

In fact, my approach to newborn photography is intentionally focused on natural connection.

I believe babies should never be put into unnatural or unsafe positions simply to create a photograph.

My newborn posing philosophy is baby-led. That means we work with your baby's comfort and cues rather than forcing a pose.

The unmatched beauty of a newborn baby really doesn't need much help.

Tiny fingers.

Wrinkly feet.

Those little stretches.

A sleepy face tucked against Mom.

A baby curled up in Dad's arms.

Sometimes the simplest photographs are the ones that become the most meaningful.

How should I prepare for my newborn session?

My biggest advice?

Don't overthink it.

You do not need to have a perfectly clean house. I can move a few things out of the way once I arrive if needed.

You do not need to have a perfectly behaved toddler.

You do not need to know how to pose.

And you definitely do not need to know how to make your baby cooperate.

That is my job.

Your job is to show up with your family.

If there is something specific you want photographed, absolutely tell me. Otherwise, I will guide you through the session and help create natural opportunities for connection.

The goal is for you to feel comfortable enough to forget about the camera. I want to session to feel like a slow Sunday morning at home with the people (and pets) you love the most.

What should we wear for newborn photos?

When you're choosing outfits for your newborn photography session, think about what you want the photographs to feel like.

Soft.
Timeless.
Natural.
Connected.

Add texture with a sweater or cozy throw blanket.

You don't need everyone in matching outfits.

In fact, I generally prefer coordinating rather than perfectly matching.

Keep everyone comfortable enough for lots of snuggling and playing.

Pick outfits for your baby that will allow access to those tiny toes and fingers. Simple onesies always work well.

Think about the colors and tones that already feel like you.

And if you are planning to print your photographs and display them in your home, you can even think about the colors in your home when choosing what everyone will wear.

Your photographs are going to live in your house.

I want them to feel like they belong there.

What if my baby won't sleep?

Then your baby won't sleep.

And that's okay.

Seriously.

Some of the most beautiful newborn photographs happen when babies are awake.

We can photograph those curious little eyes.

The stretches.

The snuggles.

The expressions.

The way you interact with your baby.

I never want you to feel like your baby has somehow “failed” the photography session because they didn't sleep.

There is no failing at newborn photography.

There is simply documenting your baby exactly as they are.

Why newborn photography is about more than the baby

I know the baby is the obvious star of the show.

But someday, your baby is going to be much bigger.

And when you look back at these photographs, I don't want you to only remember what your baby looked like.

I want you to remember how it felt to hold them.

I want you to remember the way you looked at each other.

I want your children to see how completely loved they were.

And, Mom, I want you in the photographs too.

You deserve to be in the frame.

Not because you need to look perfect.

Not because you need to lose the baby weight.

Not because your hair needs to be done.

Because you were there.

You are part of this story.

And your children deserve photographs of you loving them.
